Why RAM & SSD Prices Are Rising — And What It Means for Your Tech

An image with words: Why RAM & SSD Prices Are Rising

RAM and SSD prices have surged dramatically in a very short space of time. AI and data centre demand are soaking up global supply, pushing costs onto everyday tech like laptops, phones, consoles, and tablets. This post explains what’s happening, why it matters, and whether prices are likely to come back down.

If you’ve noticed tech quietly getting more expensive lately, you’re not imagining it.

Over the past few weeks, the price of RAM and storage has skyrocketed. Laptops, games consoles, phones, tablets — almost anything with a chip inside — is being affected in one way or another. Some manufacturers are already warning of price rises, while others are quietly changing specifications to keep costs under control.

A lot is happening behind the scenes, and it’s not being explained very clearly. So let’s break it down in plain English.

You’re reading the RAM & Storage Mini-Series. Jump straight to any part:

The RAM & Storage Memory Crisis: What’s Actually Happening?

In short, demand has exploded while supply has tightened.

Global memory manufacturers are diverting huge portions of their production away from consumer RAM and SSDs, and towards specialised memory used in AI systems and data centres. This includes High Bandwidth Memory, which is essential for running large AI models.

The result is a sudden shortage of the standard RAM and storage used in everyday devices. Prices have responded exactly how you’d expect.

In some cases, RAM pricing has increased by several hundred percent in a matter of weeks. SSD prices have risen sharply too, with manufacturers warning that further increases are likely if supply doesn’t improve.

This isn’t just a PC problem. Memory and storage are foundational components. When their prices jump, everything else follows.

Why AI Is Driving the Shortage

AI isn’t just software — it’s hardware-hungry.

Training and running modern AI systems requires enormous amounts of fast memory. To meet that demand, companies like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are prioritising AI-focused memory production over consumer-grade components.

That means fewer RAM chips for laptops, desktops, phones, consoles, and tablets. Large companies are now competing for a shrinking pool of supply, and smaller manufacturers are being priced out entirely.

Once stock becomes scarce, prices rise fast. And that cost doesn’t stay at factory level — it moves straight down the chain.

How This Affects You (Probably More Than You Think)

Memory and storage exist in almost every modern device. Not just computers and phones, but cars, appliances, smart home tech, network equipment — even things you’d never normally think about.

When the price of something this fundamental jumps by 300, 400, or even 500 percent, no manufacturer can absorb it. The money has to come from somewhere.

That usually means higher prices, lower specifications, or a combination of both. Devices that once came with generous amounts of RAM may now ship with the bare minimum. Upgrades that used to be affordable suddenly aren’t.

In other words, everything quietly gets worse value.

When Will RAM & SSD Prices Come Back Down?

That’s the big question — and the honest answer is that nobody knows for certain.

Memory markets are cyclical. When demand surges, manufacturers rush to meet it. If that demand later cools, the market can swing the other way very quickly.

If investment in AI starts to slow, data centre expansion pauses, or expected returns fail to materialise, demand for memory could drop sharply. At that point, warehouses fill up, prices fall, and the whole cycle reverses.

If that happens, today’s shortage could turn into tomorrow’s oversupply.

Our Take at Bluesdigital

We’ve seen this pattern before. Every major tech boom creates pressure on supply, and that pressure is often amplified by speculation and short-term profit chasing.

Eventually, though, high prices hurt sales. When consumers stop upgrading, manufacturers are forced to respond. Production ramps up, new suppliers enter the market, and pricing stabilises.

For now, our advice is simple: don’t rush upgrades unless you really need to. If you can wait, waiting may save you a lot of money. Refurbished tech is also a solid option while the market settles.

If you’re unsure whether now is the right time to upgrade, or you want honest advice rather than sales pressure, just get in touch. We’re always happy to talk it through.

Laptop Frozen? Here is the 10-Second Fix

How to turn off a frozen laptop - Bluesdigital, Newtown

🚨 Step 1: The “Save My Work” Trick (Try this first!)

Before you force the power off and lose what you’re working on, try this “secret” Windows handshake. It resets your graphics driver without closing your programs:

Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B all at once.

Your screen will flicker and you’ll hear a beep.

The Result: If it was a display glitch, your laptop will “wake up” instantly. Save your work immediately!

🚨 Step 2: The Emergency Shutdown (If Step 1 didn’t work)

If the keyboard shortcut didn’t help and the screen is still unresponsive, you’ll need to perform a hard reset:

This may look different for your laptop

  1. Hold the Power Button: Press and keep it held down firmly.
  2. Count to 15: Do not let go until the screen goes completely black and the fans stop.
  3. Restart: Wait about 30 seconds to let the hardware “rest,” then press the power button normally to turn it back on.

Hello!

If you’ve just used the steps above—take a deep breath. We know how stressful it is when your technology locks up in the middle of a busy day. Whether you’re a student, a local business owner, or just browsing at home in Newtown, a frozen computer is a huge frustration.

Now that you’re back up and running, let’s look at why this happens and how to stop it from becoming a habit.

Why does my laptop keep freezing?

Think of your laptop like a busy motorway. Sometimes, there is just too much traffic for the “brain” (the CPU) to handle, and everything grinds to a halt. Common causes include:

  • Overloaded Memory: Having too many high-power apps or browser tabs open at once.
  • Hidden Updates: Windows might be trying to install a large update in the background.
  • Dust & Heat: If your laptop feels hot, dust inside the fans might be causing the system to “throttle” and freeze to prevent damage.

When should I be worried?

A one-off freeze isn’t usually a disaster. However, if you are holding down that power button every few days, your laptop is trying to tell you something is wrong.

At Bluesdigital, we specialise in computer services and getting to the root of the problem. We are experts in:

  • System Speed-ups: Cleaning out software “junk” that slows you down.
  • Internal Health Checks: Checking your hard drive and RAM for errors.
  • Cooling Service: Cleaning out dust and improving airflow to stop overheating.
  • Virus & Malware Removal: Ensuring hidden software isn’t hogging your resources.

🚨Step 0: Keep Your Laptop “Rescue-Ready”

Enable Auto-Save in Apps

Microsoft Office, Google Docs (offline), Adobe apps, etc., all have auto-save options. Turn them on.

Even if the laptop locks up, most recent changes are already saved.

Use Task Manager Shortcuts

If you notice your laptop starting to freeze or become unresponsive, try Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.

Sometimes you can kill the offending program before a full freeze happens, saving the rest of your work.

Quick Backup Hack

Keep a cloud folder (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox) syncing your important files.

Even if Step 2 (hard shutdown) becomes necessary, your files are backed up automatically.

Lighten the Load

Close heavy programs you aren’t using, especially browsers with lots of tabs.

A laptop struggling with memory often freezes; reducing active apps helps prevent it.

Keep Drivers & Windows Updated

Many freezes come from old graphics drivers or OS bugs.

A little maintenance goes a long way.

Breaking news:’Instagram security breach’

Instagram Security Breach. Safety advice

This week, an Instagram security breach was discovered when hackers stole the sensitive information of 17.5 million Instagram accounts. Complete with usernames, physical addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and more, this data can be abused by cybercriminals to impersonate trusted brands, trick users, and steal their passwords.

Critically, this data is already being offered on the dark web, with individual users also receiving legitimate password reset notifications from Instagram.

What to do:

  • Beware of emails and messages that claim to come from Instagram, as they could be sent by malicious hackers trying to trick you into handing over your password.
  • If you’re concerned, sign into your Instagram account and reset your password to a new, strong, unique password.

Check if you were exposed
With a free scan from Malwarebytes’ Digital Footprint Portal, you can see if you were included in the Instagram breach. Simply enter the email address you used to register with Instagram and the free Digital Footprint scan will report your level of exposure online.

🧝‍♂️ The Bizzy Little Elf…

Busy computer shop - Bluesdigital, Newtown, Powys

Morning Job: Student Beasty PC

In a busy computer shop, the morning came.
First job of the day.
An almost complete strip and rebuild of a student beasty PC.

Initial report:

  • Failure to boot
  • No graphics output

The machine had a hefty graphics card and a low-power PSU.
This pointed to a possible power supply failure or regulation issue.

First step.
A swift graphics card swap to rule out the expensive card.
Phew.
All good.

Next thought.
BIOS corruption.

The avid student owner knew a thing or two about tuning and overclocking.
My spider sense tingled.

Quick BIOS / RTC reset via the motherboard pins.
Booted instantly.

Lesson of the day:
When we tweak motherboard-level settings, BIOS lock-ups and crashes are the price we pay for hot-rodding our computers.

It’s worth knowing how to reset your:

  • BIOS
  • CMOS
  • RTC
(or whatever it chooses to call itself)

Check the user guide for your motherboard model.
You’ll find it hidden away in there somewhere.

Sometimes it’s easy.
A tiny button on the rear panel.
Other times it’s hidden and fiddly.

Power, Wiring & Dust

With diagnosis complete, it was time to sort the power issues and wiring loom.

Unfortunately, the case design was flawed.
The CPU power connector was clamped under the motherboard.

This meant almost full disassembly.
Just to swap the power supply.

Since the engine was out:

  • All airways were cleared of dust
  • Ready for a cleaner rebuild

Upgrades and fixes:

  • Upgraded PSU installed
  • Broken SATA lead replaced
  • Well-worn case fan replaced
  • Wiring loom tidied for easier future servicing

Sorted.

Midday Job: “Manual” Printing

Next job.
Some “manual” printing for a client.

Details:

  • PDFs received via email ✔️
  • A4
  • Double-sided (save a tree or two) ✔️
  • Black & white ✔️
  • 122 prints

Sorted.

Afternoon Job: Laptop & Cards

Well into the afternoon.
A client popped in after enquiring about laptops and card printing.

The choice was made.
A lovely refurbished Dell Latitude.
For a hard-working apprentice.

We chatted about course requirements.
Laptop set up and ready for action on Christmas Day.

Bonus task.
Cards printed while chatting laptops.

Sorted.

Final Job: Canvas Print

Last job of the day.
A lovely canvas print for a lovely client.
A gift for a lovely mate.

The client is currently laid up with a busted ankle.
No chance to pop in.

Originally planned as a New Year gift.
But Bluesdigital Elves worked their magic.

Delivery arranged for Christmas Eve.

Photo received via email.
Slightly wonky.

Fixes applied:

  • Perspective adjusted
  • Straightened
  • Edges cleaned up
  • Mellow border added
  • Upscaled to 300dpi

Ready for the printing press.

🍜 End of Day

Hungry Elf needs noodles.

Why Is My Laptop Slow?

Computer repair shop in Newtown, Powys and a windows reinstall

Why Is My Laptop Slow? (And Why a Windows Reinstall Often Fixes It)

If you’ve ever asked “Why is my laptop slow?”, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get at our computer repair shop in Newtown, Powys. There are several reasons a laptop becomes sluggish, but one of the quickest and most reliable fixes is often a clean Windows reinstall.

In this article, “Windows” refers to the Microsoft Windows operating system on laptops and PCs, not physical window installation.

Here’s what might be happening — and how a reinstall brings your computer back to life.

Common Reasons Your Laptop Runs Slowly

1. Too Many Startup Programmes

Some apps launch every time you start your laptop, using up RAM — the short-term memory your computer needs to work quickly. If the RAM is full before you’ve opened anything, everything slows down.

2. A Full or Ageing Storage Drive

If your hard drive (HDD) is old or nearly full, performance will drop. Traditional HDDs slow with age, while modern SSDs (Solid-State Drives) are far faster. If you’re still on an HDD, consider upgrading.

3. Malware or Adware

Unwanted software can run in the background, stealing processing power and causing random freezing or pop-ups. Even after a virus scan, hidden leftovers can remain.

4. Old Drivers or Missed Windows Updates

Drivers let your hardware communicate with Windows. Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause lag, crashes, or hardware issues.

Why Your Laptop Often Needs a Windows Reinstall

Even well-maintained computers collect clutter over time. A Windows reinstall resets everything to clean, fast, and fresh.

If you’re local, you can learn more about our professional Windows reinstall service in Newtown, Powys.

Here’s why it works so well:

1. It Removes “Software Rot”

As Windows ages, it builds up leftover files, broken registry entries, old system settings, and fragments of uninstalled programmes. Windows has to process all this clutter, slowing your laptop down. A reinstall wipes it clean.

2. It Replaces Corrupted System Files

Laptops slow down when key Windows files become damaged. A clean reinstall restores everything to factory condition.

3. It Clears Hidden Malware and Bloatware

Even after a virus scan, trackers, adware, pop-up scripts, and browser hijackers can remain. A reinstall deletes everything — even the stuff antivirus programmes miss.

4. It Resets Drivers Properly

Driver conflicts cause lag, freezing, Wi-Fi issues, and crashes. A reinstall replaces all drivers with the correct versions.

5. It Stops Useless Background Services

Over time, apps install background processes you never see. Many do nothing useful. A reinstall removes them, freeing up CPU and RAM.

A Real Example From Bluesdigital – Computer Repair Shop

Just last week, a customer from Newtown brought in a laptop that was taking six minutes to start up! They’d already tried removing old apps, running antivirus scans, and even “speed-up tools,” but nothing worked.

We performed a clean Windows reinstall, and the difference was incredible. The laptop now boots in under 20 seconds, apps open instantly, and the fan is quiet.

This kind of transformation is exactly why we recommend a reinstall when laptops get slow — it’s like giving your computer a fresh start.

Signs You Probably Need a Windows Reinstall

  • Slow startup times
  • Apps freezing or randomly closing
  • Loud fan noise even when idle
  • You’ve tried cleaning or uninstalling apps with no improvement
  • The laptop struggles with simple tasks
  • Lots of old files and forgotten downloads
  • Frequent errors or blue screens

If this sounds familiar, a reinstall is usually the fastest fix.

What You’ll Notice After a Clean Reinstall

  • Faster boot times
  • Smoother performance
  • Longer battery life
  • Fewer crashes
  • More available storage
  • A laptop that feels almost new again

FAQ: Fixing a Slow Laptop

Why is my laptop slow all of a sudden?
Sudden slowdowns are often caused by Windows updates, malware, or a failing hard drive.

Will a Windows reinstall delete my files?
A clean reinstall resets everything. We always offer full data backup before we start.

How long does a reinstall take?
Usually 1–2 hours, depending on updates and driver installation.

Do I need more RAM?
If your laptop has 4GB RAM, upgrading to 8GB or 16GB can help — but a reinstall should come first.

Is it worth reinstalling Windows on an old laptop?
Yes. Even older machines often feel dramatically faster after a clean reinstall.

When your tech misbehaves, Bluesdigital is just around the corner

That “Black Friday” bargain can look really appealing. For any issues that arise, having access to local tech support can be a lifesaver. Don’t get me wrong — I love a true bargain as much as the next fellah. But expensive tech requires extensive support.

Case 1: The “Refurbished Bargain”

A client called about a refurbished laptop. They said they could get one cheaper on Amazon, but wanted me to set it up as usual. No problem.

A couple of days later, they dropped it off. The moment I opened the packaging, it was obvious: someone had replaced the screen, misaligned the bezel, leaving exposed backlight and blemishes all over the display.

On this model, the screen and bezel are glued in place — it’s not a 10-second fix to clip it back in. And there’s a real risk of damaging the screen while trying.

They began contacting the seller via Amazon. After many frustrating attempts, they were finally given a return label… which they had to pay for.
Still waiting for their replacement… over a week later.

Actual savings over a fully prepped similar model from us? £35 (minus the return cost).

Case 2: The New Laptop

Our second case is a customer who had some bad experiences with refurbished computers, so they were looking to buy a new machine. After some queries about requirements for the laptop, I gave a shortlist of manufacturers & machines that would suit the tasks nicely.

They dropped their laptop off for a data transfer, and we powered it up — only to see warnings about the power supply. Several frustrating chat sessions later, they finally agreed to send a replacement. Luckily, the next one worked perfectly!

Here’s The Deal

The right support makes all the difference. Local support can save you stress, time, and frustration. We know finding the right product at the right price isn’t always simple. Wherever you shop, we’re happy to help you get it working perfectly — and if you choose to shop with us, even better!
